LIFESTYLE FOOD

APRIL 2015

And now for some breaking (bread) news: Iconic Japanese bakery, Boulangerie Asanoya opens shop in Singapore and we can’t wait to taste its delicious breads and pastries. Buh-bye, low-carb diet!

In Singapore, specialty bakeries are about a dime a dozen these days. So why are we looking forward to — almost drooling, in fact — tasting the goodies at Boulangerie Asanoya? The famous Japanese bakery recently opened in Singapore and we will be sure to queue up for these goodies:

Fruits Rye bread
This is the bakery’s flagship product, and has been a bestseller for the past 20 years — selling out as fast as the bakers can put them on the shelves. And for good reason: The combination of orange peel (from France), rum raisin (with the raisins soaked in rum to bring out their sweetness), lightly crushed walnuts and roasted almonds in the bread is almost impossible to resist!

Karuizawa Raisin
This bread is a scene-stealer. For one thing, it’s huge! It can reach around 70 centimetres in diameter and weights around 1,800 grams. The bakers say that its size allows the bread to be fluffy and soft inside.

Tea bread
This bread uses the finest earl grey tea leaves and condensed milk to make the dough, resulting in a soft bread that is great toasted and slathered with jam or marmalade.

White bread and wholemeal bread
Japanese simplicity comes to the fore in these two breads, which are popular with loyal Asanoya customers who come in everyday to buy a fresh loaf.

Maple Walnut bread
Fans of walnut will definitely love this bread, which has double the nuttiness since the filling is delicious walnut cream! Extra points for the cute heart shape.

Honourable mentions
While you’re in the shop, be sure to check out: Harvest bread, which is baked by wrapping chestnuts and sweet potatoes in pain Campagne dough and curry doughnuts, which are blended with 30 different kinds of spices and lightly seasoned with brown sugar. The delicious and dense curry is wrapped in crisp dough and fried. Yum!
